Besieged by enemies not just of armament but of also of disease, hunger, bitterly cold winters, and death, volunteer nurses went on a mission to save lives. Joining American doctors serving with the French Army before America even declared war with Germany, they arrived at the western front. Moving with the tents of the casualty clearing stations, they chose to remain close to the wounded soldiers who needed them the most.
This is a story of courage, faith, and love. The Meuse is the first segment of the fictional journey of Simon, Lydia, and Marcus dedicating their lives to their patients and each other while forming unbreakable bonds. Lydia must lead her group of nurses without wavering. Before nursing was even established as a profession worthy of licensure, women gave sacrificially. Nursing is not for the fainthearted. It is for the brave. This is dedicated to nurses everywhere

With a Master’s Degree in Nursing and a Master’s Degree in Counseling, Rachael Hiatt enjoys portraying true to life fictional characters. Her character dialogues reflect the human struggle to find faith and meaning in life. Having been a nurse for over fifty years, she dedicates her writing to all those patients she has been privileged to know.
Rachael is a practicing Registered Nurse, a mother of two, and a grandmother of three. When the pen goes down, there is always piano, poetry, and watching Snow Geese migrate to fill the time. With gratitude to all of her patients, to her mother who was her most loyal critic, and to God, she offers this novel to her readers
